If you cannot afford to pay for training, there are many free online courses that can enable you to build up your skills.

If you were made redundant, needed time off to care for a sick family member, or went travelling, explain your employment gap in a few sentences in your CV and cover letters upfront, rather than waiting to be asked (or worse – leaving the recruiter to make their own assumptions).
